Bohemond |
|
| Bohemond, Prince of Taranto, was a member of a Norman clan who had taken control of a large area of southern Italy and Sicily. Some time before the crusades, he had been involved in an invasion of the Byzantine empire commanded by his father, Robert Guiscard. Initially successful, the Normans wer defeated and forced to retreat back to Italy. | |
| Anna Comnena, Daughter of Alexius Comnenus and one of the chroniclers of the First Crusade, was fascinated by him. Of all the crusaders she met as a young girl, Bohemund was the only one she described in such vivid detail. He obviously made quite an impact. |
Bohemond the
Barbarian His skin all over his body was very white, and in his face the white was tempered with red. | Bohemond was a very tall man, nearly a foot taller than many of his contemporaries, and powerfully built. As was the fashion among Normans of his day, he was smooth shaven and kept his blonde hair cropped short to his ears. | |
